Road and railways

It is not just the starting-point and the destination that influences the design of motorways and railways. The road and rail also have to integrate well with their surroundings. That is why Royal Haskoning opts for a multidiscipline approach which factors in the environment, legislation, safety and profitability.

Routing 

Route studies encompass the entire geometric 3D design of roads and railways, environmental impact reports and harmonisation in the landscape. Naturally we carry out the design process in close cooperation with all the other disciplines involved. We take care of the complete package of specific skills as well as the communication aspect—an extremely important factor in these matters. 

Light rail

Light rail is a generic term for trams, high-speed trams, metro systems and light railways. The systems have many interfaces with the environment. Systematic thinking and customized work are important for a successful project. Fitting solutions can be found by using an integrated approach to accessibility, landscaping, safety, construction and planning.

Heavy rail

Rail structures are the parts of the rail system that carry the load. In addition to classic structures on a track with a bed of ballast, railway sleepers and rails, Royal Haskoning designs specially-adapted structures for specific locations. Exactly what the most suitable structure is depends to a great degree on the surroundings, noise, future use, building methods and phasing. The interaction between safety and energy supply is also integrated into the design.

Roads

Together with the geometric design we take care of the complete civil engineering design including the dimensions of all types of surfacing structures—and the same goes for runways and taxiways, and surfacing for container terminals. Policy developments in the field of sustainable building and low congestion execution are incorporated in the recommendations. And of course the design we come up with is cost-effective and optimised economically in relation to the cost of maintenance.

Safety

In addition to designing traffic signalling and traffic management systems for road traffic we also design train safety systems. Through our involvement in projects in a great number of countries and knowledge about developments such as ERTMS we have the experience to quickly get to the bottom of different systems.
