Nayachar Island, located at the confluence of the Hooghly River and the Haldi River at the northern extent of the Bay of Bengal. It is a small island, believed to have accreted from alluvial (river) derived sediment over the past 100 years.
Universal Success Enterprises Limited (USEL), on behalf of New Kolkata International Development Pvt. Ltd and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation, along with the Government of West Bengal is planning to develop a New Petro Chemicals Complex on Nayachar Island in the Hooghly Estuary.
The proposed site will provide a network of industrial and logistics for the oil and gas industry in West Bengal. This development will form one of the largest petrochemical hubs in India.
The study involves gaining some certainty on the stability of the Nayachar Island and suitable cost effective measures that will be required to develop the island.
Haskoning India’s scope of works comprised the following:
Review of existing information and assessing the hydraulic stability of the Island based on the available information. Recommendations for further modelling and detailed studies to be carried out.
Providing various options on shore protection measures with indicative cost estimates. Development of the preferred option.
Providing concept designs and indicative cost estimates for bunds.
