Royal Haskoning has been appointed by DP World as the design and PMC supervision consultant for the first phase of the Cochin International Container Transhipment Terminal development. This terminal is the largest single operator container terminal currently planned in India and the first in the country to operate in a special economic zone. The first phase of the development will achieve a capacity of approximately 1 million TEU and it is envisaged that the final development will have an ultimate capacity of approximately 3 million TEU. One of the key design challenges of the project was the soft ground conditions and the potential for ground settlement. As a result the design incorporates ground improvement techniques to consolidate the existing ground to create a suitable platform for the port infrastructure. The project includes some 600m of deep water quay together with container storage yards, rail container terminal and container freight station facilities.
Stages:
The site currently has a multi-discipline, multiple-nationality technical-team to supervise the ongoing massive construction work.
